10 habits that block happiness
People try their best to pursue happiness, and many are fully aware of things that must be done in order to be happy.
However, knowing the factors that disturb happiness and bring misery is equally important. Huffington Post has suggested 10 habits people have that blocks happiness.
1. Holding a grudge
When a person has feelings of anger or resentment toward others, the intension to hurt them will eventually backfire.
Therefore, individuals must try to see the situations and the people they hate from a different perspective. Why would they behave like this? What good qualities does this person have that have gone unnoticed? Asking these questions will naturally help people understand others and the grudges will gradually disappear.
2. Giving up on dreams
One of the joyous things about life is that people are capable of having dreams. However, some dreams are not fulfilled simply because individuals do not have the courage to pursue them. They choose to take the safer path because of their fear of failure. This results in a lot of regret later in life.
Thus, instead of wondering how life could have been, people must always try their utmost to achieve their dreams. If so, even if the dreams remain unfulfilled, they will be a lot happier than if they hadn’t tried at all.
3. Not making time for something that brings joy
Needless to say, happiness is achieved when people do what they enjoy. However, people often miss out on something they truly love because they are too busy doing something they think must be done first.
Nevertheless, if the priority is not given to those things that bring joy, life will be dull and meaningless, and people will be completely unaware of the happiness they could be experiencing.
4. Having superficial relationships
Nowadays, most conversations are superficial, and no one cares to talk about things that really matter.
Happiness, however, can be achieved by having people around who understand and listen. By sharing feelings or asking for advice, people feel more connected and attached to one another. Thus, it is important to be vulnerable and open up.
5. Comparing
One person might be rich but suffering from a failed marriage, while another may be unsuccessful at work but have a family that couldn’t be happier.
Comparisons are arbitrary, exaggerated and unreal. Therefore, having no idea what is really going on in others’ lives, it is meaningless for people to compare themselves with others. Instead, people should enjoy what they already have.
6. Valuing possessions over experiences
People are often happy when buying or getting something they wanted. However, this kind of happiness lasts for a very short time. The joy of getting something will fade once the person becomes accustomed to it.
On the other hand, life experiences such as going to dinner with an old friend, traveling or meeting loved ones provide everlasting happiness and meaningful memories.
7. Letting fear rule over creativity
Because of the inner fear people have in their hearts, they tend to avoid making creative decisions. However, life is all about making new choices and having new experiences.
The best decisions are always made out of creativity, so do not hesitate to try something new.
8. Telling themselves that life is “good enough”
Nothing’s ever enough for those who are happy. Truly happy people push their boundaries and make progress, because they know that it is rewarding and fun. By doing so, they achieve much more happiness than others.
If people think that their current status is good enough, they will eventually get used to what they have and stop feeling happy about it.
9. Not giving
Although people achieve some happiness by obtaining what they want, the joy of sharing things with others should not be left out.
It does not have to be something big. Activities like volunteering or donating a small sum of money to charity can add to the happiness people get from giving to others.
10. Failing to live in the moment
Stop worrying about what will be in the future. Stop living in the past. The true joy and contentment toward life can be made when enjoying the present moment.
When people are obsessed with something that cannot be altered, they will never get to enjoy every moment, and will never be happy with what they have.
